SSDS-101-1: SSD Controllers (SSD Technology Track)
Paper Title: Enabling Flexibility in the NVMe SSDs for the Cloud Scale Architecture

Paper Abstract: As the adoption of NVMe SSDs are increasing in Cloud and Data Centers, the requirements and challenges for the SSD controllers and architecture are expanding. SSD suppliers need freedom of flexibility in an NVMe SSD controller to design and offer differentiating application specific SSDs to different cloud service providers. The flexibility in an SSD controller can help with the supply issues or address the rapidly evolving NAND media technologies. How to partition the firmware and hardware in the NVMe controller architecture to provide such design flexibility is a key to the success of keeping up with the cloud storage needs. This presentation is going to discuss the advancements in the NVMe SSD controller architectures that are necessary to keep up with the requirements of scaling and dynamic nature of cloud implementations apart from performance, power, and capacity.
