CLDS-102-1: Cloud Storage Technologies (Cloud Storage and Applications Track)
Paper Title: Designing Granular Lifecycle Management for the Cloud

Paper Abstract: Cloud vendors expose APIs and SDK to specify lifecycle management policies for objects stored in a bucket. However, a lot of applications write different types of objects in the same bucket. Cloud vendors do not have necessary APIs to provide granular control for lifecycle management at the object level. In this talk, I would like to discuss a software design to allow applications to tag objects and specify policies for managing lifecycle transitions of the object. This will include several software components such as Tagging Module, a Policy Engine, a Lifecycle management process, and Data Movers. Using these techniques, organizations such as Netflix and Box can save millions of dollars by actively moving the data into appropriate tiers of storage.
