SUST-202-1: Sustainable Data Centers and Energy Efficiency Part 2 (Sustainability Track)
Chairperson + Speaker: Tejas Chopra, Sr. Software Engineer, Netflix

Organizer: Wayne M. Adams, SNIA Chairman Emeritus, SNIA

Paper Title: Beyond Carbon Footprints: The Holistic View of Sustainability in ICT

Paper Abstract: Sustainability in the ICT industry is more than energy efficiency and a carbon footprint. Sustainability is about understanding the entire lifecycle of devices, circular business models, and transparency and reporting of externalities like GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, energy, material, water, waste, and other environmental impacts. While reporting Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect associated with energy production) emissions are becoming common, Scope 3 (all other indirect) is much harder to calculate and requires transparency of all emission-causing activities across the value chain. New methods for LCAs can help vendors determine the impact of circular business models.
