DSEC-201-1: Archive Technology (Data Security and Protection Track)
Organizer: Chuck Sobey, Chief Scientist, ChannelScience

Paper Title: Inside the Cloud: A Deep Dive into Cold Data Archiving

Paper Abstract: Cold data, though infrequently accessed, is valuable for regulatory, legal, audit, and disaster recovery purposes. Strategic archiving can optimize cost, scalability, and performance. Key archival features that enable this optimization will be explained for AWS S3/Glacier, Azure Archive Storage, and Google Cloud Storage. Important topics, such as asynchronous access and data staging will be put in proper context along with metadata stores and the complexities of constructing enterprise-level distributed archival systems. Attendees will learn practical aspects of archival strategies, distributed systems, and cloud archives, such as data integrity, continuous repair services, and managing system boundaries.

Paper Author: Vikranth Etikyala, Sr. Staff Software Engineer, Fintech SoFi

Author Bio: Vikranth is a Senior Staff Software Engineer and a cloud expert at Fintech SoFi, he is currently leading a team of engineers building SoFi Bank 2.0 infrastructure using modern cloud technologies. Previously he was an early member of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) a planet scale storage system where he was part of building foundational storage infrastructure and lead efforts scaling S3 during its exponential growth. He spearheaded features like ListV2, Transfer Acceleration and Intelligent Archival which now handle millions of transactions per second moving petabytes of data. He also holds a Master degree in Computer Science from Northeastern University.
