NEWM-201-1: 3D XPoint: Current Implementations and Future Trends (New Memory Technologies Track)
Paper Title: Where is 3D XPoint Headed?

Paper Abstract: Intel and Micron announced 3D XPoint Memory in SSD and DIMM formats in mid-2015, yet the DIMMs have only recently become available. What has taken so long? Why is nobody else doing this? Do computers really need another layer in the memory/storage hierarchy? How big can the market grow? This presentation will answer these and other pressing questions about 3D XPoint Memory, and will project the future course of this technology, including its impact on other memory types and on competing memory manufacturers. Key points from a recently-released Objective Analysis study will show the audience how important this technology is to Intel’s processor strategy, and why Intel is willing to go to great lengths and lose significant sums to bring its Optane XPoint products to volume, while other companies, including Intel’s manufacturing partner Micron, hesitate to join in.
