NVMF-302-1: Benefits and Use Cases for NVMe-oF (NVMe-oF Track)
Paper Title: SmartNICs for E2E NVMe Disaggregation in a Software Defined Datacenter

Paper Abstract: Since its ratification in 2016, NVMe over Fabrics has become the accepted protocol for disaggregating NVMe media. Even as more features get added, such as support for TCP as a transport, universal adoption of NVMe over Fabrics has been slow due to the challenges of deploying across any OS and hypervisor platform as well as supporting the Storage Services required in a production environment. SmartNICs are a new platform with the necessary features and capabilities to enable this. This presentation will focus on how SmartNICs can be used to solve problems such as: integration into any OS, high performance support for RoCE or TCP transports, offloading host with storage services like on-the-fly encryption, RAID, and more.

Paper Author: Fazil Osman, Distinguished Engineer, Broadcom

Author Bio: Fazil Osman is a Distinguished Engineer in the Compute and Connectivity Division at Broadcom. He has over 30 years of technical and leadership experience spanning a broad range of fields such as semiconductors, systems, storage and networking. Among other things, he has designed the first commercial single chip Ethernet switch, Cisco’s first Ethernet switch, the Catalyst 1200 and well as the first 10Gbps TCP termination and storage ASIC. Presently, at Broadcom, he is driving Broadcom’s strategy for how SmartNICs enable datacenter disaggregation.
