SOFT-201-1: Composable Infrastructure and Software-Defined Storage (Software Track)
Paper Title: Storage Management with Swordfish API for Open-Channel SSDs

Paper Abstract: The Swordfish Scalable Storage Management API standard defines methods for storage QoS management. In addition to the pure logical storage management (including block, object and file storage), the Swordfish API provides models defining Lines of Services (e.g., performance, protection, and security) that can be combined within Classes of Services to build various QoS profiles. The Classes of Services may be associated with all storage objects (e.g., pools and volumes) in Swordfish API. In this presentation, Swordfish API with QoS profiles will be used to orchestrate a Hybrid Storage System exposing block level volumes containing a software-based ZNS FTL for ZNS SSDs (either native ones or emulated on top of Open-Channel SSDs). This hybrid storage system also uses Intel Optane SSDs to provide fast caching using low latency, high endurance, and good QoS. A ZNS FTL running on the host provides a number of knobs (e.g., overprovisioning ratio, Garbage Collection mechanism triggering thresholds) whose configuration affects the amount of NAND read and program/erase collisions, which is the main factor impacting application level perceived QoS.
