Paper Title: Off Module Power Loss Protection: Cost efficiencies for enterprise systems

Paper Abstract: Boot drives for enterprise systems need to ensure data integrity in the event of system power losses and system crashes. As such, these systems are typically configured with expensive enterprise grade drives with on-board power loss protection (PLP). Most hosts/systems have integrated PLP capabilities and the PCI-SIG's proposed "off module power loss protection"€ standard will expand the system's PLP coverage to the boot drive. This will enable the use of more cost-effective client grade drives for system boot applications. The concept of Off Module Power Loss Protection involves moving the detection and backup power mechanisms to the host system or a daughter card, and FLUSHing any acknowledged data in the volatile memory when power loss is detected. Off Module Power Loss Protection is in the process of being standardized by the PCI-SIG, and this talk will provide a review of the technical aspects of implementing OMP in Hardware and Firmware for an enterprise-level boot drive.
